The Constitutional Court of the Republic of Bulgaria will celebrate the 35th anniversary of its establishment with a series of conferences in 2026. The institution will mark the event with three forums to be held in Sofia and Veliko Tarnovo. They will trace the history, development, and challenges facing the constitutional jurisdiction, which was established in Bulgaria in 1991.

The first conference will be held on the Day of the Bulgarian Constitution. On April 16 in Veliko Tarnovo, serving constitutional judges and former judges, representatives of the legislative and executive branches, representatives of the judiciary and the Bar Associations, as well as prominent academics will gather for a solemn celebration dedicated to the history of the Constitution. The event, organized with the support of the Veliko Tarnovo Municipality, will take place at the “Renaissance and Constituent Assembly” Museum, where the Tarnovo Constitution was adopted on April 16, 1879.

The official events hosted by the Constitutional Court this year will continue with an international academic conference at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”. The forum will take place on May 20, and the Faculty of Law is a co-organizer. Among the topics to be discussed by constitutional judges and invited lecturers from European universities will be the legitimacy of constitutional jurisdiction and the application of EU law by Constitutional Courts.

The final event that the Constitutional Court will organize for its 35th anniversary will take place on October 15 in Sofia. The international conference will take place on the same days that 35 years ago - on October 3, 1991 - the constitutional judges of the Court’s first composition swore an oath and took office. The discussions, which will address the place and role of the Constitutional Court in a state governed by the Rule of Law, will include official guests, including delegations from Constitutional Courts and equivalent institutions of various countries. During several working panels, they will focus on the challenges facing Constitutional Courts and their role in ensuring the Rule of Law.
